Faerûn
About Faerûn
Faerûn is the vast central continent of the Forgotten Realms - the primary setting for Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s a world of ancient magic, warring kingdoms, divine intrigue, and creatures both wondrous and terrifying. From the glittering cities of the Sword Coast to the lightless depths of the Underdark, every corner of Faerûn holds a story.
You don’t need to know a thing about D&D to play here. Whether you want high fantasy adventure, political scheming, a chance encounter in a tavern, or something far darker - the world shapes itself around the story you want to tell.
The World
The Forgotten Realms
Faerûn is one continent on a world called Abeir-Toril - but it’s so sprawling and varied it might as well be a world unto itself. The western coast (the Sword Coast) is where most of the famous cities sit: Baldur’s Gate, Waterdeep, Neverwinter. Inland lie ancient forests, crumbling empires, and vast wilderness. Beneath the surface runs the Underdark, a subterranean world of caverns and horrors where drow cities and mind flayer colonies exist in uneasy tension. The world is old, full of ruins from civilisations that rose and fell long before the current age.
Baldur’s Gate
One of the most powerful cities in Faerûn, Baldur’s Gate sits at the mouth of the River Chionthar on the Sword Coast. It’s a city of stark divides: the wealthy Upper City is home to the patriar noble families who run the city, while the crowded, chaotic Lower City is where most people actually live - under the (sometimes brutal) watch of the Flaming Fist mercenary company. Beyond the walls, the Outer City sprawls in organised chaos. It’s a place of commerce, ambition, crime, and opportunity, where fortunes are made and lost and the law is a matter of perspective.
Wiki →Waterdeep
Called the City of Splendors, Waterdeep is arguably the most important city in all of Faerûn - a vast, cosmopolitan metropolis ruled by a council of masked Lords whose identities are kept secret. It’s a city of guilds, noble houses, magic shops, and backroom deals. The famous Yawning Portal tavern sits above the entrance to Undermountain, a legendary dungeon that descends for miles beneath the city. For adventurers, merchants, or anyone looking to disappear into a crowd, Waterdeep has something for everyone.
Wiki →Races & Creatures
Faerûn is home to an extraordinary variety of peoples. Elves (high, wood, and the subterranean drow), dwarves, halflings, gnomes, tieflings (those with infernal blood in their lineage), dragonborn, half-orcs, and humans all walk its roads. Beyond them, the world teems with monsters - from goblins and kobolds to beholders, mind flayers, vampires, and ancient dragons. Not everything monstrous is an enemy. Not everything that looks trustworthy can be trusted. In Faerûn, the interesting characters rarely fit neatly into one box.
Gods & Goddesses
The gods of Faerûn are real, and they meddle. Clerics draw genuine divine power from their patron deities, and the gods have been known to appear - in disguise or otherwise - in mortal affairs. Key figures include Mystra (magic), Selûne (the moon), Shar (darkness and loss, and Selûne’s eternal twin), Torm (duty and loyalty), Bhaal (murder), and Kelemvor (death and the dead). Divine favour, divine disfavour, and the wars between gods all ripple through the lives of ordinary people. Even an atheist in Faerûn has a complicated relationship with the divine.

Open World
Make Your Own StartAn open-world scenario set in Faerûn. No lore knowledge needed, just treat it as any high fantasy setting. Make your character, give the bot whatever it needs to know about who you are and where you want to begin, and go. It’s narrative-focused, with no dice rolls, slots or inventory, but it still handles active combat well.
Example Starts
InspirationNot sure where to begin? A few example characters to borrow or build from: Bob, a silly little goblin; Fiera, a travelling tiefling; and Sunny, a lost human.
There’s So Much More
Faerûn is just one part of a much larger multiverse. Beyond the Material Plane lie stranger and darker places: the Feywild, a magical mirror of the world saturated with colour and emotion, ruled by the Seelie and Unseelie courts of the fey; Ravenloft, the Domains of Dread - gothic horror demiplanes ruled by Darklords, where the mists trap the wicked (and the unlucky) forever; and the Shadowfell, a grey, desolate reflection of reality where shadows lengthen and the dead linger. The Forgotten Realms wiki is the best rabbit hole you’ll ever fall down.
