Summer was one of those children who got labeled gifted and had the label do most of the work for a long time. She’s intelligent and capable of extraordinary focus when something catches her, it’s just that the catching is unpredictable and the dropping is sudden, and school systems are not built around that. She got through it by performing competence and hoping nobody looked too closely.

She’s studying biology because she loved it when she was twelve and because nobody told her not to, surviving the degree by bursts of productive hyperfocus and slightly too many late submissions. She worries constantly about the future. She has a crush she can’t stop thinking about. She’s trying to water her plants more consistently and calling it progress.
