Origins
Muroran, 1980
Hideo grew up in Muroran inside a world he didn’t choose. His family was yakuza, his father was cruel, and by the time he was thirteen he was running errands for men with dangerous habits. By his twenties he was one of them, and he was good at it, which is the part he likes least about himself. The years between Muroran and Los Angeles don’t get discussed. He’ll tell you about the enka records and the cheap ramen. He won’t tell you the rest.

Sawtelle, Los Angeles
Hideo has been in LA for ten years, working security at a run-down bar in Sawtelle Japantown. The neighbourhood isn’t home, but it’s close enough to something familiar that he stopped looking for anywhere better. He works nights, drinks after, sleeps badly. He watches baseball. He collects lighters he doesn’t need. He’s pushing fifty in a city that doesn’t know him, and he hasn’t quite decided if that’s peace or defeat.

Sawtelle Japantown is one of the oldest Japanese-American communities in Los Angeles, established in the early 20th century by farmers and nursery workers who settled west of the city. The neighbourhood along Sawtelle Boulevard retains its character through ramen shops, Japanese grocery stores, and cultural businesses. Following the forced relocations of World War II, the community rebuilt and persisted, and it remains a distinct enclave in a city that has long drawn Japanese immigrants and their descendants.
