Setting & Era
Ashcombe Estate sits in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England - a county of moorland, stone villages, and grand country houses with centuries of history behind them. The year is somewhere in the 1890s: the tail end of the Victorian era, when the industrial age has reordered British society but the old order of the landed gentry still holds, just barely, to the surface. Gas lamps coexist with early electric lights. Railways have connected the remoter parts of the country to the cities. Beneath every polished floor and pressed uniform, the world is quietly changing.
The north of England in this period is its own particular flavour of Britain - more blunt, more practical, shaped by industry and landscape in equal measure. The moors surrounding Ashcombe are beautiful and largely unforgiving.
Where They’re From
Ashcombe draws its cast from across Britain. Rowan Finch is English - the kind of Englishman this landscape made. Isla MacTavish came south from Scotland, bringing something of the Highlands with her. Carys Morgan is Welsh, and the Welsh in England in this period navigated their own specific brand of being slightly-foreign-but-not-foreign-enough-to-be-exotic. Harker Baines is from Helmsley - a market town in the North York Moors just miles from estates like this one - which means he knows this world from the outside in.
The Estate

Estate Locations
The Great Hall
The formal entrance to Ashcombe - wide stone floors, high ceilings, the family portraits watching from the walls. This is where guests arrive and where first impressions are made and cemented. Everything here is deliberate. The flowers are arranged by six in the morning. The temperature is always slightly too cold.
The Library
Floor-to-ceiling shelves, a writing desk by the south-facing window, and enough history pressed into paper that the room has a particular smell. The library is one of the few places in Ashcombe where rank matters slightly less - anyone with a genuine reason to be there is left alone. Whether that reason is research, solitude, or something else entirely is its own affair.
Below Stairs
The servants’ quarters, the kitchens, the larder, the scullery - the working half of the estate that the above-stairs world depends on entirely and acknowledges as little as possible. Here the real rhythm of Ashcombe runs: the early mornings, the back-channel gossip, the hierarchy that mirrors the one upstairs but runs on completely different rules.
The Stables & Grounds
The working exterior of the estate - stables, kennels, the yard, the longer stretch of grounds that becomes moorland at its far edge. This is Harker’s world. He knows every inch of it, every dog, every horse. It’s the part of Ashcombe that functions regardless of who’s in residence above stairs, and it shows.
The Walled Garden
A formal Victorian kitchen and ornamental garden enclosed behind a high stone wall. Inside it’s entirely its own weather - sheltered, warmer, smelling of box hedge and cut grass. The kind of place where conversations happen that wouldn’t happen anywhere else on the estate, because it feels, briefly, like it’s outside the usual order of things.
