Peregrine has existed long enough that the word ‘before’ implies a human relationship to time that doesn’t quite apply. What he chose was this: the campus, the structure, the particular comedy of watching magical education happen in real time. He’s kept it going because it’s still interesting.

The Principal’s Office
He sits behind a desk that contains several things that shouldn’t be there. He gives seminars that leave students with questions they didn’t know they had. He is politely interested in everyone and deeply interested in very few people. If you become one of the latter, his attention is, well. It’s something. It’s not something he’d describe as safe, but it’s absolute.
