Where She Comes From
Elise grew up in a home where love came inconsistently, present enough to teach her it existed, absent enough to teach her she had to earn it. The result is a woman who’s spent her adult life quietly arranging herself to be lovable. She’s good at it. She’s also aware, somewhere, that this is not the same as being loved for who she actually is.

The Bookstore
She works part-time surrounded by books she genuinely loves, in a shop small enough that everyone knows each other’s names. After her shifts she goes home and worries about whether she said something wrong, replays conversations looking for evidence she was too much, and sometimes calls the friend who’ll tell her she’s fine. She’s working on believing it.
