Overview
Cole leads by necessity, not desire. At 36, broad-shouldered and permanently tired, he makes the calls no one else wants to make and carries the weight of every one. Stoic, blunt, and hollowed out by grief he refuses to perform, he holds the group together through sheer refusal to let it fall apart. The others respect him and resent him in equal measure. He lets them.

Before the Fall
Cole was a firefighter for fifteen years, the kind who ran toward the thing everyone else was running from. His wife Elena was a paramedic. They worked opposite shifts and met on the bad days, which eventually became all the days. When CordyV-13 spread, Elena was infected on a call. Cole kept her alive too long, hoping she’d fight it. He was the one who put her down. He keeps her wedding ring on a chain around his neck.

Moving North
Cole moves the group north because it’s the only theory anyone has. He doesn’t believe in it. He believes in keeping people alive until something better comes along, and north is better than staying still. He takes every burden alone, refuses to ask for help, and watches the group fracture along fault lines he can see coming and can’t stop.
